Popular Dietary Advice Increases Disease

Major public health organizations have been lying to you yet again. The USDA MyPlate program, the American Heart Association, the American Diabetes Association, the American Cancer Society, and probably your doctor have all been telling you to eat low fat dairy. They’ve all been misleading you. They are dead wrong. Read on to learn why and what you can do about it.

For decades the leading voices in public health have been giving us the wrong advice. They believed that dietary fat caused disease. But they were wrong. And, it turns out, science has never supported their claims. Now the picture is increasingly clear. Not only is low fat dairy not healthier. It’s actually harmful. Meanwhile, full fat dairy offers many benefits. In what follows we’ll look at some of the common misconceptions about low fat versus full fat dairy.

Eat Fat For A Health Weight

For decades we’ve been given a deceptively simple message. We have been told that dietary fat makes us fat. It’s so simple and seemingly logical that many of us have believed it. And so we’ve taken the advice to reduce dietary fat intake. National surveys show that we’ve followed the advice. But guess what? We’ve gotten fatter!

The reason we’ve gotten fatter while eating less fat is because the message isn’t true. And researchers have been shaking their heads in disbelief all along. That’s because they knew it wasn’t true. They’ve seen the outcomes of study after study showing that dietary fat doesn’t make people fat.

Finally, after decades of absurdity, a few of the public health organizations have come clean. For example, the Harvard School of Public Health has declared that the amount dietary fat you eat does not make you fat. Nor does it contribute to any diseases. Unfortunately, the USDA and the other big name public health organizations aren’t yet fessing up. Maybe they’re embarrassed? Maybe they know they’ll lose all credibility. But they keep on dispensing the same bad advice.

As I said, study after study has shown that dietary fat doesn’t make people fat. And a recent Harvard analysis of all the published studies on the matter has shown just that. The Harvard research team showed that full fat dairy actually helps people remain leaner than low fat dairy! That means that ironically, skim milk makes people fatter than does whole milk.

So if you want to maintain a healthy weight, ditch the fat free and low fat yogurt and milk. Enjoy the full fat counterparts.

Dairy Fat and Cancer: Is There A Connection?

Another claim that’s been made (falsely) over the years is that eating dairy and particularly dairy fat contributes to cancer risk. This has scared a lot of people away from dairy altogether. And it has caused a lot of people to switch to low fat dairy instead of full fat.

Unfortunately, these claims about dairy and dairy fat increasing cancer risk are completely inverted. It turns out that dairy and particularly dairy fat protect against cancer. The scientific studies have always shown that people who consume more dairy, including full fat dairy, are at a much lower risk of most types of cancer. A review of those studies shows that dairy consumption, including full fat dairy, reduces risk of colon, bladder, esophageal, and most types of cancer. In fact, most studies show that full fat dairy reduces the risk even more than low fat dairy.

The only type of cancer affecting men that has been shown to increase with dairy consumption is prostate cancer. That has led to many headlines such as “Milk doesn’t do a prostate good?” But guess what? The only type of dairy that increases prostate cancer risk is low fat dairy. Full fat dairy, on the other hand, reduces the risk.

To protect yourself against cancer, including prostate cancer, refuse the skim milk and insist on whole milk, cream, and butter instead.

When researchers have looked at rates of cardiovascular disease and what people eat, they’ve found something that contradicts the American Heart Association. Worldwide, people who eat more dairy, including full fat dairy, are at a lower risk for all types of cardiovascular disease than those who don’t.

Studies have found that dairy fat in particular actually improves cholesterol profiles. In other words, the “good” type of cholesterol transporter (HDL) increases and the “bad” type of cholesterol transporter (LDL) decreases relatively when people eat full fat dairy. They have also found that full fat cheese in particular is even more beneficial in this regard.

Studies have also found that fermented full fat dairy such as yogurt is effective in lowering high blood pressure.

For heart health, pass on the low fat varieties, and eat more full fat cheese.

Could Cream Prevent Diabetes?

Despite the American Diabetes Association’s warnings to choose only low fat dairy, there is no evidence that dairy fat causes diabetes. In fact, some recent studies have found exactly the opposite.

A study conducted by the Harvard School of Public Health found that those who eat more dairy fat have low risk of developing type 2 diabetes. They found that not only was dairy fat protective against diabetes, but it also resulted in lower triglycerides, lower fasting insulin, and lower blood pressure. None of these benefits was seen with non-fat dairy.

The Fat Is Where The Good Stuff Is
