Common Spice Protects Brain Health And More

Brain Growth Hormone

Scientists discovered a hormone that is involved in the growth of the brain. It’s called brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF).

Like all parts of your body, your brain should be always growing and changing. New cells form, and new pathways are established. This contributes to something called plasticity. Young, healthy children who are growing and learning rapidly have high levels of plasticity because they have high levels of BDNF.

Unfortunately, many adults have reduced levels of BDNF. And that means their brains aren’t growing and changing rapidly. That’s not a good thing.

Low levels of BDNF have been linked to lots of health problems. Studies have found that people with major depression have low levels of BDNF. So do people with Alzheimer’s.

The good news is that the spice turmeric has been proven to increase levels of BDNF. And studies have shown that turmeric can actually reverse depression, Alzheimer’s, and other brain-related disorders.

Cleaning The Brain

One of the problems that can happen in the brain is a buildup of plaque. It’s called amyloid plaque, and it is one of the causes of Alzheimer’s disease.

Turmeric has been shown to prevent amyloid plaque buildup. And even more impressive, it can actually clean out existing plaque.

That means that turmeric has yet another way in which it protects the brain and can prevent and even reverse degenerative brain diseases.

One of the reasons that turmeric is able to do this is because it is able to get into the brain in the first place. The brain protects itself from most substances. But some substances like turmeric that the brain recognizes as safe and beneficial are allowed across the protective barrier.

Removes Iron

In previous articles I’ve told you about the potential dangers of excess iron. Not only can it cause damage to organs like the liver. It can also harm the brain.

In fact, research has confirmed that excess iron plays a key role in the development of Alzheimer’s. And other studies show that excess iron may be involved in other types of dementia, memory loss, and cognitive decline.

Well it turns out that turmeric has yet another powerful protective property. That’s because turmeric removes excess iron from the body, including the brain.

Researchers have been amazed at how effective turmeric is at reversing iron accumulation.

Reduces Inflammation

Another way in which the brain can become injured over time is chronic inflammation. Unlike other parts of your body, your brain does not have any pain receptors. So when your brain is inflamed, you won’t feel pain. Instead, you might just feel less than great. You might feel irritable or have difficulty thinking as clearly as you’d like.

Over time, excess inflammation can cause chronic problems. So preventing excess inflammation is important both for short and long term health.

Turmeric is a powerful, safe, and natural anti-inflammatory. And, since it crosses into the brain, it is one of the few things that can protect against brain inflammation.

Eating Turmeric

Two of the most common ways in which people eat turmeric are in curry and in yellow mustard. Turmeric lends the orange color to both. While any amount of turmeric will offer some benefits, most people aren’t eating enough curry or mustard to get maximum benefits.

If you enjoy the taste of turmeric, then an easy way to benefit is to eat it with foods regularly. Some people also enjoy the taste of turmeric in their morning coffee. But the taste of turmeric isn’t for everyone.

So another option is to use encapsulated turmeric. It’s more expensive than powdered turmeric .But it has the advantage of being convenient and tasteless. Plus it won’t stain everything orange.

Now, when you look for turmeric, you may come across products called curcumin. Marketers of those products will claim that they are more powerful than turmeric. Curcumin is an extract from turmeric. It is an isolated component. And while it is true that most of the modern research has been done on curcumin extracts, there are many other beneficial compounds in turmeric. So plain turmeric is both less expensive and beneficial. Either turmeric or the curcumin extract will work.

Finally, because turmeric is poorly absorbed, it should always be taken with food that increases absorption. Dietary fats can increase the absorption by a lot, so eat turmeric with butter, coconut oil, or other good fats. And black pepper has been shown to dramatically increase the absorption. So sprinkle a little black pepper on your food as well.


The common spice turmeric has been proven to have powerful beneficial effects on brain health. It protects against degeneration, increases healthy growth, prevents plaque build up, removes excess iron, and reduces inflammation. Eat or supplement with turmeric daily to protect your brain.
